History of the Kallison Love Lock Bridge
The tradition began in 2012 when locals Ken and Nita Shaver placed the very first lock near the Courthouse Wedding Chapel on their anniversary. Their idea grew quickly—hundreds of couples added locks, creating a beloved local tradition.
Due to walkway repairs, the fence filled with locks was moved in 2023 to the Kallison Walk Bridge, where the tradition continues today. Once repairs finish, all locks may return to their original site, preserving every couple’s story.
The love-lock tradition dates back to early 20th century Serbia and became globally famous at the lock bridge in Paris before inspiring versions across the United States. Though far smaller than famous bridges in New York City or near national park sites across the country, the Kallison Love Lock Bridge remains a uniquely intimate symbol of love in San Antonio.
