History

The San Antonio River Walk was born from both tragedy and innovation. After a devastating flood in 1921 claimed more than 50 lives, city leaders sought a long-term solution to control the river's flow. Their answer became one of Texas’s most iconic landmarks: a series of walkways built one level below the city, designed not only for flood control but for public enjoyment.

Construction began in 1939 with support from the Works Progress Administration, transforming the riverbanks into a beautifully landscaped urban oasis. When Casa Rio, the River Walk’s first restaurant, opened in 1946, it signaled the start of the area’s tourism boom—one that still thrives today.

The River Walk’s Mission Reach connects directly to the UNESCO-listed San Antonio Missions, offering a scenic extension to the cruise. Over the decades, the River Walk expanded from its original three miles to more than 15 miles of pathways, connecting historic missions, downtown attractions, museums, parks, and cultural districts.
