History of the Tower of the Americas

The Tower of the Americas was built as the signature structure for HemisFair ’68, the 1968 World’s Fair celebrating the 250th anniversary of San Antonio. Designed by renowned local architect O’Neil Ford, the tower was created to symbolize progress, innovation, and the spirit of Texas.

Construction began in 1966 and took just 18 months, an impressive feat for a 750-foot structure. The most remarkable part of the build was the tower’s 1.4-million-pound “top house”—containing the restaurant and observation decks—which was assembled on the ground and then hoisted to the top using 24 massive steel rods.

During the lift, several supporting cables snapped, leaving the structure hanging at an angle. Engineers solved the problem using oil-field pipes, showcasing true Texas ingenuity.

The tower officially opened to the public on April 11, 1968, just days after the World’s Fair began. It immediately became one of the most recognizable landmarks in San Antonio.

Over the decades, the Tower of the Americas has become a beloved destination, known for its views, revolving restaurant, and family-friendly attractions. Today, it stands as a testament to San Antonio’s history, resilience, and architectural ambition.
